ESIA - Non-conventional Energy Initiatives

ROI has just completed a comprehensive Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) of the non-conventional energy projects of one of the largest international energy companies in India. The project was significant from an academic point of view as a number of Industrial Ecology concepts, including an LCA, were integrated into a traditional ESIA. The study also provided major directions for similar projects in other parts of the world. The study report will be released only after obtaining permission from the company.

Assessment of an Industrial Estate

The ROI was asked by the Supreme Court Monitoring Committee in India to make an assessment of the Doddaballapur Industrial Estate, near Bangalore. A system analysis was made based on the principles of Industrial Ecology and this formed the basis of the Committee’s report to the Court. The study was sponsored by the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board and the Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology. This highlighted the use of Industrial Ecology in setting priorities and to rationally and quantitatively evaluate the extent of an environmental “problem”. The report is available for download and the file is titled “Doddaballapur Industrial Estate”

Global Tracking of Environmental Impacts

The ROI is associated with the project titled “Tracking Environmental Impacts of Consumption: Linking OECD and Developing Countries to Alleviate Negative Consequences”. This project, supported by the Geneva International Academic Network (GIAN), aims at going beyond traditional environmental assessments, e.g. the United Nations Environment Program's (UNEP) environmental assessments, by analyzing the links between current environmental degradation (air pollution and its impact) and the upstream leading causes (consumption and production systems) on a world basis. It will offer a systemic view of the regions particularly affected by trade patterns and facilitate identification of areas, sectors and products that would be appropriate for alleviation policies, e.g. allocation of foreign aid, development of fair trade.

Study of Agro-Industrial Systems

An analysis of the flows of material & energy resources through three selected agro-industrial systems in Karnataka, India, was carried out.

The systems chosen for study were rice, sugarcane and cotton. Detailed material flows were prepared for the three systems. It was demonstrated how such studies could be used regional planners for planning agriculture and setting priorities for policy. A CD based on the study is being widely distributed among policy makers in India.

The final report is available with the ROI. A PowerPoint presentation of the results of the study is available for download. The file is titled “Agro-Industrial Systems”.

RUM for Water in Bangalore

A Resource Utilization Map was prepared for water in Bangalore city. An attempt was being made to understand "who is using how much water & for what purpose." Such information could be of great help to utility planners. A report on the study will soon be available for download.
