  Resource Utilization Map

Once a specific resource has been identified as critical, considerably greater information is needed on the way it is used, before any strategy can be planned. For that purpose, a Resource Utilization Map (RUM) is suggested as a possible format (Figure below). This diagram can give a great deal of information about the usage of a particular resource. Such quantitative data are essential for taking any relevant action to optimize the use of a resource; particularly, to plan the use of scarce resources—be it energy, water, land or forest. The “resource” in the RUM is as defined by the user—it could be a material like coal, or a facility. For example, a RUM is in the process of being prepared for water in the Indian city of Bangalore by the Resource Optimization Initiative (ROI)
